Salt is probably the most famous and well-documented humpback whale in the world. She was the first humpback to be identified, back in 1975! We don’t know her exact age, but we know she is at least 46 years old. Salt has had a total of 15 calves and is not only a grandmother but also a great grandmother!
Salt is one of a few humpback whales not named for the pattern on the underside of her fluke. She was given her name due to the white colouration on her dorsal fin which looks like someone has sprinkled salt on her. It is thanks to Salt that we know you can identify humpback whales as individuals. She has continued to teach us about humpbacks are their incredible lives.
Adopt Salt today and learn about the lives of humpback whales.
