Reflection was first seen in 1992 when she was still a young whale. She has a beautiful symmetrical pattern on the underside of her fluke which is where her name comes from. But it is her feeding ballet that makes her recognisable from a distance - she catches fish with her face out of the water and a big splash of her tail, in a behaviour we call kick-feeding.
Over the years, she has been seen returning to the feeding grounds of the Gulf of Maine with her five calves born in 2000, 2007, 2009, 2014 and 2017. Humpback whale calves will return to the same feeding grounds as their mothers. Reflection is well known for being a real survivor!
