Midnight was first sighted in the early days of humpback whale research in the Gulf of Maine back in 1979. She was already an adult so we don't know exactly how old she is. The underside of her fluke is very dark so it's easy to see why she received the name Midnight. Her nickname is 'Ms. Petite' because of her rather small size even as an adult. But don't let her petite stature fool you, she's a very determined whale.
Seven years after she was first identified, she returned to the Gulf of Maine with her first known baby named Sombrero. She has now had ten more calves, making her a mother of 11 overall. While she is often seen alone, she has also been a doting mother to all her calves.
