Named after the roman god of war, Mars is a mature, powerful female humpback whale who was first photographed in 1979. Sadly, she bares the marks of entanglement in fishing gear on her tail, but this hasn’t affected the pure strength and resilience we see from Mars and her family!
Mum to 11 calves and grandmother to 6 calves, Mars is one of the rare female humpbacks to give birth to calves in consecutive years, she gave birth to Seal in 1984 and Excalibur in 1985. Mars is strong and affectionate with her young and once lifted one of her calves, Seal, with her flipper and rolled him over her back!
Our team in North America see Mars’ large family in the summer months on their route to warmer waters where they come to socialise, breed and look after their young. When you adopt Mars it will be a little bit like adopting her whole family.
