Rare Shepherd's beaked whale strands in New Zealand

A rarely seen Shepherd’s beaked whale has died after stranding on a beach in New Zealand. The whale was discovered at Caroline Bay in Timaru on Monday evening.

Despite the efforts of rescuers the whale could not be saved. It is not the first time a Shepherd’s beaked whale has been seen in the area, leading to speculation there might be a population living in nearby waters.
