Humpback whales return to Scotland's east coast

Following the increased sightings of humpback whales around the coast of Scotland in the last couple of years, two more whales have been seen feeding off the east coast near Aberdeen in recent weeks.

One of those lucky enough to see the whales was local WDC Shorewatch volunteer, Monica Carrie. The shot below was taken at the Torry Battery watchsite in Aberdeen harbour. “I think this was possibly the most incredible sighting as I certainly did not expect to see a humpback whale this close to the harbour,” said Monica. “Seeing these amazing creatures so close, yet living wild and free is something very special and I think we are very privileged to experience this.”

The first humpback arrved around five weeks ago and has now been joined by a second whale, seen feeding here together at the Ythan rivermouth.
