Document reveals whale meat could be in feed on Norwegian fur farms

A document has been released which suggests that whale meat is being used in feed supplied to fur farms in Norway.

Norway’s whalers continue to carry out commercial whaling each year, killing hundreds of minke whales, though in recent years they have been unable to reach their government’s self-allocated quota of over 1200 whales.

The discovery of the document by colleagues at EIA and AWI comes as Norway continues to struggle to find markets for its whale meat. WDC has shown in the past that there is little domestic demand in the country with Government subsidies helping to prop up the industry. In 2015, it was revealed that whale meat exported to Japan had been dumped after routine safety tests discovered that it contained up to twice the allowed level of potentially dangerous pesticides.

Also in 2015, a Norwegian company was fined after attempting to sell whale meat at a food and agricultural fair in Germany.

More on whaling in Norway and the trade in whale meat.
