Orca biologist, writer and poet, Eva Saulitis dies
WDC is saddened to hear of the passing of biologist, writer and poet, Eva Saulitis. Eva was a resident of Alaska, and, together with her partner, Craig Matkin, spent most of her adult life documenting the lives of the orcas of Prince William Sound, Kenai Fjords and the Aleutian islands. Following the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 the plight of one extended family of orcas (known as the Chugach transients) became the subject of her eloquent and thought-provoking book, Into Great Silence. Eva’s great gift lay in bridging the gap between science, poetry and storytelling and her wisdom, through her many essays, poems and books, will live on to guide generations to come.
