San Diego dolphin deaths to be investigated

US authorities announced on Wednesday that they would be investigating the deaths of two bottlenose dolphins that were recently washed ashore just miles apart in San Diego, California.

The deaths occured just a day after the US navy carried out an excercise that involved the use of mid-frequency sonar.

The local population of bottlenose dolphins is just over 300, so the unexplained death of two individuals in quick succession is significant. Necropsies (post-mortems) on the dolphins have been carried out as part of the investigation.
