Outdoors is best

As this is my first blog post I will start by introducing myself. My name is Lorna and I am the education officer based at the Scottish Dolphin Centre. Probably the best thing I could tell you about myself is that I love my job. I get to work with a wide-range of people and share with them my enthusiasm for the marine world. Not only is it fun, it is also massively rewarding and I feel very lucky to be doing something I enjoy!

The summer holidays at the centre are always exciting for our small education team here as we run our children’s holiday club. The children that come along enjoy games and activities taking place in the great outdoors, exploring nature and the environment and learning about conservation through these hands-on sessions … all whilst having as much fun as possible! We hope that from this the children take away what they have learned and become enthused about spending time outdoors exploring their local wildlife and caring about its protection.

Leading up to the holidays our education volunteers have been crazy busy planning and organising these fun outdoor sessions and every Wednesday over the holidays they get to put these plans into action. I have to say they have been doing an amazing job!

There are a lot of things our volunteers need to consider when planning our kid’s club; from the suitability of activities for children aged 4-10 years old, to the timings of each activity, as well as keeping in mind health and safety. From all this our volunteers gain experience and skills in project management and outdoor education.

So far this summer we have explored Scotland’s amazing wildlife under Kristina’s ‘Wild Scotland’ theme and Laura’s ‘Things with Wings’ sessions got off to a flying start last week with the young wildlife warriors behaving like buzzing, dancing, bum-wiggling bumblebees!

The next two sessions promise to be just as fun, this week we include chocolate eggs and water guns into the mix! Though the 6th August is fully booked, we still have a few spaces available for our last session on Wednesday 13th August. If you would like to enquire or make a booking please ring 01343 820 339. The cost is £2 per child for a single session and children must be accompanied by an adult. Find out more on our events page!
