Summer Action at the Scottish Dolphin Centre

Well the 6 weeks holidays have kicked off here in Scotland and as I am writing this blog the sun is beating down on Spey Bay (I would love to take the office outside on the beach today!). Even the wildlife knows it is summer as the dolphins, seals and ospreys are turning up every day to give our visitors a treat. I have even caught a glimpse of the odd otter or two! Even when the real dolphins out in the Moray Firth are being quiet our visitors can spot a few special dolphins at the Scottish Dolphin Centre.

These beautiful sculptures are on display as part of the Wild Dolphins project taking place around Aberdeen this summer. Fifty large dolphins have been decorated by artists and placed in and around the city centre, to be auctioned off in September. The money raised will go towards supporting the work of WDC and the Archie Foundation, a charity helping sick children in the north of Scotland. As well as these fifty fine individuals, a number of local schools decorated smaller, calf-sized dolphins that have been placed in libraries around Aberdeen. Three of these are also temporarily on display in the exhibition area of the Scottish Dolphin Centre and we are thrilled to have them join the team for the summer!

After seeing the dolphins breaching, fish throwing and basically having a great time there is still lots for our visitors to do over the summer. Every Saturday (weather permitting) we will be running free Summer Fun Activity Days 11am-3.30pm. This includes dolphin watching, bug hunting and den building, you never know what fabulous creepy crawly you may find! If bug hunting isn’t your thing on Sunday 3rd August there will be a Bird Watching for Beginners guided walk 2:15pm-3:45pm. So why not come and improve your bird ID skills with handy tips of how to spot and identify them (Booking is essential, please call 01343 820339). To celebrate the end of the 6 weeks holidays here in Scotland join us here at Spey Bay for a party extravaganza; Pirate Day! On Sunday 17th August, from 10:30am-4:30pm, join in with all the pirate activities from walking the plank to a treasure hunt. Sample the swashbuckler pirate cuisine in the café and enter the best dressed pirate competition; if you turn up in fancy dress!

It is going to be a very exciting summer here at Spey Bay so why not pop in to say hello, spot some dolphins and join in the fun.
