Environment Protection Agency concerned by recent whale deaths in Ghana

The Environment Protection Agency has said there are no links between the recent deaths of several whales washed up off the coast of Ghana and oil exploration in the region. Local activists are seeking a full enquiry, claiming that the whales had only started to appear since local oil production began in 2009.

The oil firms concerned have refused to comment but the Environment Protection Agency has stated that it was not clear yet what had caused the deaths which were a matter “of much concern”.

It is reported that five dead whales have been washed up in the past week, taking the total since 2009 to 16.
