Surfer knocked unconscious by southern right whale

A surfer has been knocked unconscious by a 40ft-long southern right whale in shallow water off Australia’s Bondi beach.

The whale, which had surfaced amongst a group of about 15 swimmers and surfers, flicked Bishan Rajapakse, a 38-year-old doctor, off his board with its tail less than 100ft from the shore.

Hundreds of spectators enjoying the winter sunshine had been watching the whale. The whale then dived beneath the group of men sitting on their boards and flicked its tail, sending the surfers and their surfboards flying and knocking out Mr Rajapakse.
