Former WDC international director of science awarded OBE

Former WDC international director of science, Mark Simmonds has been awarded the Order of British Empire (OBE) by Her Majesty the Queen.

The award, announced in the Queens Honours List at the weekend, has been granted in recognition of services to environmental science and marine mammal conservation.

WDC’s chief executive, Chris Butler Stroud said: “Mark’s contribution to whale and dolphin conservation and protection is immeasurable. His commitment and passion for these remarkable creatures has helped WDC achieve many of our most successful campaigns.”

In a personal statement, Mark says:

“It is deeply gratifying that the value of marine conservation has been recognised in this unexpected way in the Queen’s 2013 Birthday Honours. I am delighted that WDC is recognised in the citation for the award, I have spent the better part of the last two decades working with them, and I continue to work closely with this very special and important charity.”

Mark worked for WDC for 17 years and we pass on our congratulations for this well-deserved award.
