Fiji joins UN backed conservation treaty

WDC is delighted to hear that Fiji has been accepted as a member of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), a UN backed treaty that aims to protect wildlife and habitats around the globe.

This is good news for the protection of whales and dolphins that migrate through waters in the Fijian region  WDC has been actively involved in all aspects of whale and dolphin protection work in Fiji and our work has played a significant role in getting the government of Fiji to become a CMS member.

In particular, the announcement is a tribute to the work of WDC’s Cara Miller, who has been fundamental in raising awareness of the issues facing whales and dolphins in and around Fiji, running a hugely successful local research project involving local communities and also helping to protect critical whale and dolphin habitats.
