Swiss Government Moves To End Dolphin Captivity

WDCS is delighted by news that the Swiss government has taken its first steps in outlawing the import of dolphins.

This move comes after the shocking incident at Switzerland’s only dolphinaria, Connyland, where two dolphins died within the space of a week last year.

The dolphinarium had previously accused animal activists of poisoning the dolphins but an evaluation by the Institute for Veterinarian Pathology revealed that the use of antibiotics on two dolphins (“Chelmers” and “Shadow”) last November caused brain damage which then led to their deaths. An investigation into procedures followed by the vets responsible for the two dolphins is now underway.

Only three dolphins remain in captivity in Switzerland and an import ban would effectively mean they would not be replaced when they die.
