Humpback Whales Spotted Off The Aberdeenshire Coast

Up to three humpback whales have been spotted off the coastline around Forvie (just north of Aberdeen, Scotland) over the past couple of weeks.

This is a rare occurrence with only a few reports of coastal sightings on the east coast of Scotland and northern England each year.  Research indicates that the numbers of humpabacks may be increasing very slightly, possibly as they begin to recover from years of whaling.

Humpbacks are more frequently seen in coastal waters in summer months than winter though and tend to be frequently heard out in the Atlantic off the west coast of Scotland in the winter months.

They pass through the waters around the UK as they migrate north to south to feed.
