WDC in Action
Our work around the world to help protect whales and dolphins.
Whaling, the hunting of whales, continues to be practised by countries such as Japan, Iceland and Norway, with around 2000 whales being killed each year.
Keeping whales and dolphins in captivity is wrong. Capture is traumatic, their lives are shortened in captivity and they are split up from their families.
Homes for whales and dolphins
Whales and dolphin populations are at risk and so they need areas where they are protected from pollution, from fishing nets and hunting, and many other dangers that threaten the places they call home
Dolphin drive hunts
Every year in Japan and the Faroe Islands hundreds of whales and dolphins are herded into coves and then killed and captured in brutally cruel hunts
Rights for whales and dolphins
Science now shows us just how intelligent some whales and dolphins are and how important each individual is to the group, so we think they deserve the right to a life free from hunting and captivity
Pollution can come in the form of oil and chemical spills, from human waste and from increasing noise levels in the water, all of which can have a terrible effect on whales and dolphins
A whale or dolphin hit by a vessel (boat or ship) is likely to die or be severely injured and these collisions now threaten the very survival of some endangered species
Climate change is a major threat to whales, dolphins and porpoises. The climate is changing fast: so fast that some whale and dolphin populations may be unable to adapt.
Strandings and rescue
Each year, thousands of whales and dolphins are found dead or stranded around our coastlines
Conservation and Research
WDC supports and leads ground-breaking scientific research, funding whale and dolphin conservation field projects around the world.
Whale and dolphin watching
To see 'whales and dolphins' in the wild is a powerful, moving experience but do your research. The best trips and operators have respect for the animals and the places in which they live, but the worst trips can even put whales and dolphins at risk
Scottish Dolphin Centre
The WDC Scottish Dolphin Centre is one of the best places in the UK to watch dolphins.
