Captivity in the EU - Poland
Poland is a Member to ASCOBANS, the Agreement for the Conservation of Small Cetaceans in the North and Baltic Seas. Of particularly grave concern in the ASCOBANS region is the decline of harbour porpoises in the Baltic Sea, whose population is critically endangered and thought to consist of only 600 animals. It faces extinction if no serious action is taken on the threats it faces, which includes bycatch. The Parties to ASCOBANS have endorsed what is called the Jastarnia Plan to engage in the recovery of the species, but whether conservation efforts will be successful is yet to be proven.
